有鑑於GM集團旗下將擴充愈來愈多的電動車款，包括目前已經在市場上販售的CHEVROLET Volt、準備上市的CADILLAC ELR以及CHEVROLET Spark EV等等，以及逐步廣泛應用於旗下車款的 eAssist light electrification系統等等，都促使GM集團對於車用電池的需求日益增加，因此GM近來特別擴編了旗下的電池實驗室，打造成為北美最大、同時也是全球車廠中最先進的車用電池研究中心。
